Research Area: Fundamental Mechanisms of
Cardiovascular Function

Return to Research Areas page

Ultimate understanding of heart and blood vessel diseases will rely on an in-depth knowledge of the fundamental processes underlying normal, healthy cardiovascular function. While significant advances have already been made, in most instances we simply do not know how the heart and blood vessels function or how their function is regulated.

Many scientists in the UW Cardiovascular Research Center have primary research interests which focus on cardiovascular function at the tissue, cellular and molecular levels. In a system as complicated as this, there is a need for expertise in a variety of disciplines including physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and cellular and molecular biology.

In the Center, scientists in these disciplines work together closely on problems of fundamental importance. This interdisciplinary approach has greatly accelerated the rate at which we are developing new knowledge about cardiovascular function.

Many UW Cardiovascular Research Center members are involved in areas related to cardiovascular mechanisms. Please refer to our listing of center members by research interest.
