The University of Wisconsin Atherosclerosis Imaging Research Program (UW AIRP) serves as a core ultrasound reading and training laboratory for:

• clinical and epidemiological research studies that use ultrasound-based research tools as surrogates for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease risk:
  • carotid intima-media thickness (carotid IMT or CIMT)
  • brachial artery reactivity testing (UBART)
  • arterial stiffness (by tonometry)
  • assessment of cardiac structure, function, and coronary blood flow (by echocardiography)
• clinical programs that want to use carotid IMT (CIMT) measurements for the evaluation of subclinical atherosclerosis and assessment of cardiovascular risk

CIMT and UBART training includes didactic and hands-on scanning and reading sessions for physicians, sonographers, study coordinators, and other health care personnel. Topics covered during training sessions include image acquisition, image interpretation, instrumentation, quality assurance, and data management. The UW AIRP also will assist with the development of scanning protocols, cost-effective budgeting, and sample size calculations for research and clinical programs. Each training session is customized to meet the needs of the participants.
