Training in Clinical Use of Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (CIMT)

Training involves two full days. Both physicians and sonographers are strongly encouraged to attend. Administrators, nurses, physicians, and other related personnel also may find this training useful; however, training in imaging and reading only will be provided for physicians and registered or registry-eligible sonographers. This is a hybrid learning course with web-based educational modules to be completed before the training and a series of live, in-person didactic lectures, demonstrations, and discussions that review all aspects of setting up a clinical CIMT program. These activities comprise 1/3 of the course time. The majority (2/3) of the course is devoted to hands-on, supervised scanning and reading practice.

Topics include the scientific rationale for use of CIMT in a clinical setting, use of carotid ultrasound to identify subclinical atherosclerosis, scanning protocols, imaging pitfalls, instrumentation, study interpretation, and report generation. We also cover quality assurance, report generation, our experience with third party payers, and the recent ASE Consensus Statement on the clinical use of carotid ultrasound to identify subclinical vascular disease and evaluate cardiovascular disease risk.

Educational materials are provided to help sites start their clinical program. Guidance regarding software or hardware you may need to purchase to start a program is provided.

The 2010 training dates for clinical use of CIMT are as follows:

March 5 – 6, 2010
May 7 – 8, 2010
October 8 – 9, 2010
