Claudia E. Korcarz, D.V.M., R.D.C.S.
Manager, UW AIRP
UW Atherosclerosis Imaging Research Fellow, 2006-2008
Training and Experience
Dr. Korcarz received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1986. After practicing equine veterinary medicine, she moved to the United States in 1988 and worked as a Cardiology Research Associate at the University of Chicago, Chicago, IL. In 1990 she became Assistant Technical Director and Manager of the Noninvasive Imaging Cardiology Laboratories at the University of Chicago Hospital and Clinics, where she provided echocardiography training to medical students, house staff and cardiology fellows and served as an instructor in adult echocardiography for the University of Chicago preceptorship program. She has been a registered diagnostic cardiac sonographer and has practiced adult echocardiography since 1994. She came to the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in 2002, where she is a clinical cardiac sonographer in the Adult Echocardiography Laboratory, Manager of the UW AIRP, and Instructor in the UW Ultrasound School.
Dr. Korcarz previously was on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), a member of its Research Committee and Sonographer Training and Education Committee, and is a frequent speaker at the ASE Annual Scientific Sessions since 2001. She co-chairperson of the ASE Carotid IMT Writing Group. She has worked as a consultant in protocol development for the noninvasive evaluation of cardiovascular function in animal models for several pharmaceutical companies. She helped develop new techniques to evaluate cardiac function in knockout and transgenic mice models and has published training materials for murine echocardiography.
In 1992 she was awarded First Prize in the Research Poster Competition of the Illinois Chapter of the American College of Cardiology for her work "Comparison of simultaneous Doppler and electromagnetic measurements of instantaneous aortic flow characteristics in humans." In 2002, she was the first recipient of the American Society of Echocardiography Sonographer Research Award for her project "Noninvasive determination of global and regional arterial compliance during normal pregnancy." She is co-author in more than 80 abstracts and 50 peer review articles in the field of echocardiography and vascular ultrasound.
Dr. Korcarz's research interests include ultrasound assessment of atherosclerosis, vascular function, and cardiovascular physiology. She has a special interest in the effects of sleep apnea and its treatment on cardiac function and arterial function.
